Key points: • Trenches 4 feet or deeper need a ladder, stairway or ramp within 25 feet of lateral travel (1926.651(c)(2)). • Keep spoil piles and materials at least 2 feet from the edge. • Test the atmosphere in trenches over 4 feet where hazardous atmospheres could exist. • Never work under raised loads; stay out of the bucket swing. Scenario: The ladder is 40 feet down the trench from where you're working. Is that okay?
