Focus Four
Electrocution Hazards
60 min · OSHA 29 CFR 1926 · 3-question quiz
Focus Four — from the Anvil & Co. course library.
What you will learn:
• Recognize overhead power lines, damaged cords and missing ground faults.
• Keep safe clearance from power lines.
• Use GFCIs and lockout/tagout.
Key points:
• Assume every line is energized. For cranes and equipment, keep at least 20 feet from lines up to 350 kV unless the utility confirms otherwise (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC).
• Use GFCI protection on temporary power, or an assured equipment grounding program.
• Inspect cords daily. Remove cords with cut jackets, missing ground pins or taped splices.
• Lockout/tagout: shut off, lock, tag and test for zero energy before working on equipment.
• Only qualified persons work on energized parts. Keep ladders non-conductive near electricity.
Scenario: A dump truck needs to raise its bed under an overhead line next to the stockpile. What steps come first?
